According to Barry Woods, manager of Financial Services, the non-profit organization did not qualify for tax exemption due to its current zoning and use. While the owner of the land has submitted a redesignation application, Wood said, the file is still being processed.
“[With] the services that are being provided currently…any savings that they see in their non-profits would be applied, probably, to more of those types of services,” Coun. Kevin Hanson said, expressing his support of the tax relief.
Coun. Kim McKylor was the sole councillor to oppose the decision.
“I think if we start taxing or not taxing based on a proposed land use that’s not in place, I think that’s a dangerous place,” she said, calling the request “premature.”
