A Calgary company has been fined a staggering $330,000 following a workplace fatality in 2022.

On March 3, 2022, a worker for a Calgary industrial equipment company Westpower Equipment Ltd. was fatally injured by a pump cover when it detached from the grip of an overhead crane.

Earlier this week on April 22, the Calgary industrial company pleaded guilty in the Calgary Court of Justice under Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines for failing to ensure the safety of an employee.

The company was fined $275,000 along with a $55,000 victim surcharge.

Westpower Equipment Ltd. and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal conviction or penalty.

22 additional charges under OHS legislation were dropped by the Crown.
