Letter to the Editor: We all must do more to conserve water in a shortage

Dear Editor,

Much of Alberta is in a water shortage which is predicted to worsen. We have to live with our poor planning for minimizing the amount of water used and wasted. Some solutions such as widespread grey water recycling are long term but implementation should be started now including required legislation. Utilize technology that has already been used successfully in Canada (including Alberta) albeit in low numbers.

There are things that we can all do. Stop watering lawns with potable water. To reduce required watering stop mowing lawns or at least cut as high as possible. There are lawns that look quite nice that have grass and bordering hardy plants not mowed or trimmed. People that love a short manicured lawn will not be happy with this idea but need to give it a chance. Plant hardy perennials rather than annuals that need more watering.

Stop using hanging plants (which need frequent watering). Plant hardy perennials rather than annuals that need more watering. Stop flushing the toilet after each person pees! Make sure you are using water-saving shower heads (mandated in some jurisdictions).
