RMO photojournalist wins 2021 Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award

Congratulations to RMO photojournalist Evan Buhler for winning the prestigious 2021 Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award.

BOW VALLEY – The Rocky Mountain Outlook's staff photojournalist Evan Buhler has won the prestigious 2021 Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award.

The award is presented annually to one early-career photojournalist by The Canadian Journalism Foundation and The Canadian Press (CP).

"Evan grabbed the jury's attention with his first image and showed a depth and variety of skills throughout his portfolio," said Frank Gunn, a CP national photographer, in a press release.

"Evan's varied work history demonstrated perseverance and a commitment to the craft that will allow him to maximize the opportunities of the scholarship."

The award was established in memory of the late and award-winning CP photographer Tom Hanson. The award will provide Buhler with an opportunity to work at CP's Toronto head office for a six-week internship.

The experience will allow Buhler, who has been with the RMO since September 2019, to hone his skills, be mentored by experienced photojournalists and have an opportunity for national exposure.

"It is an honour and it is something that will allow me to take the next step in my career by working with some of the best photojournalists in Canada," Buhler said.

Prior to working at the RMO, Buhler also worked at the Salmon Arm Observer in B.C.

The award will be presented during a virtual CJF Awards ceremony on June 9. Buhler's portfolio was selected from submissions from students and early-career photojournalists from all over Canada.

The CJF and CP launched the award in 2009. Catherine Hanson, his wife, and Heide Kaspar-Glorieux, Hanson's mother, are also part of the selection committee along with senior staff with CP, current and retired photographers and past recipients.
