The Airdrie and District Quilt Guild will showcase the work of its members as it raises funds for the Airdrie and District Hospice Society at A Celebration of Quilts, Oct. 19 and 20 at the Balzac Community Hall.

"It's going to be a really great fun event," said Catherine Beamer, publicity co-ordinator for the guild.

She said there will be 100 quilts to view; a silent auction with smaller, wall-hanging quilts; and a raffle for a queen-sized quilt, with proceeds from the raffle going to the hospice society.

"We have some really great door prizes," Beamer said. "There's many of them, but probably the most spectacular is a Bernina 325 sewing machine – and that's coming from Pinheads [Quilting Company Inc.] here in Airdrie."

She added the prize is valued at around $1,200 and is "a significant machine."

The show will feature the work of Terrie Copley, according to Beamer.

"She has been sewing for a very long time," she said. "Many of the quilts that she has completed will be there to view. So, you'll be able to see her progression as a quilter and just appreciate the work that she's done."

A Celebration of Quilts will also include a "Merchant Mall" and boutique for those wanting to get a head start on Christmas shopping. Beamer said products for sale include quilted items, such as place mats, and crafts. Admission to the event costs $7, and includes a coffee or tea, and a free dessert. Children under 12 receive free entry.

"Oh, we surely would love people to come to our quilt show," Beamer said. "You know, we're going to be raising money for charity and sharing our talents."

Airdrie and District Quilt Guild is a non-profit group that donates quilts and sewn items to a number of organization, including Community Links, the Airdrie Lioness Christmas Hamper Program, Habitat for Humanity and more.
