One of the really cool features of the City’s new multiuse and library facility will be dedicated space for displaying artwork.

Not only will there be an art gallery on the main floor of the building, but the library will also have proper space to display local artists.

Until then, however, we must be patient and keep using our wall space above the stacks.

While it can get a little tough on the ol’ neck looking up to see the art, viewing the creations of the many, many talented Airdronians who display their work at Airdrie Public Library is worth it.

For the months of May and June, we have two new artists, Afshan Khan and Gary W. Giesbrecht.

Khan is an abstract visual artist who works mostly with acrylics using a palette knife.

Her pieces are bold and colourful, capturing her intense love of nature with each dab of paint and stroke of her knife.

She says her inspiration comes from the simple things in life, such as going for walks with her family and their dog, hiking, listening to bird songs early in the morning, going on long drives, and exploring nature and its beauty.

Giesbrecht says he’s always had an interest in art, but it wasn't until 1997 after seeing a flyer advertising art lessons, that he began his journey as an artist.

Taking inspiration from his earlier days in the rodeo, his subjects are classic Western themes.

Rodeo, horses, cattle, people, birds, and wildlife spring into stunning realism through Giesbrecht’s masterful use of watercolour, pencil, pen, and ink.

Come and meet both artists on Friday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Light refreshments will be served, and the artwork will be available for purchase.

Please RSVP online for yourself or for your family (one RSVP per family is fine).
