Library Link: The magic of Harry Potter returns to APL

For a few magical hours, come dressed as your favourite character no matter your age.
"Accio." Come one, come all to Harry Potter Day on April 6.

While programs are on break here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), we’d like to chat about the literature genre that has captured imaginations for thousands of years.

Fantasy fiction, which often features implausible worlds and supernatural elements has no basis in science fact or speculation, but, nevertheless, has a long history as a genre.

History’s oldest known fictional story, dating back to 2100 B.C., is the "Epic of Gilgamesh," a mythic poem describing the adventures of a Sumerian king named Gilgamesh.

Gilgamesh is described as one-third man and two-thirds god who embarks on the classic hero story; slaying monsters, hobnobbing with other gods, and the ultimate quest for immortality.

Four thousand years later, the “Lord of the Rings,” “Grimm’s Fairy Tales,” and the Narnia and Harry Potter series, to name a few, continue to hold a place in our imaginations, providing escapism from the difficulties of everyday life.

This year, APL is excited for the return of Harry Potter Day on Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Drop-in for magical adventures in crafts, activities, games, food, and wizardry inspired by “the boy who lived.”

The popularity of J.K. Rowling’s young hero endures, providing millions of readers, of all ages, the opportunity to immerse themselves in a world of fantastical beasts, wizards, and spell-casting suspense.

For 27 years, countless fans across the world have celebrated Potter and his adventures with book nights, costumed parties, and daytime events, usually offering a mix of games, readings, and plenty of magical fun.

For a few magical hours, come dressed as your favourite character no matter your age, but most of all come for a time of adventure and childhood-wonder celebrating the amazing world found within the pages of the Harry Potter series.
