The colours and flavours of Mexico will be on display at Nose Creek Park Sept. 15, during the family-friendly and free Viva Mexico festival.

Airdrie will be treated to the sound of mariachi music and the taste of traditional fare when the first annual Viva Mexico festival is held Sept. 15 at Nose Creek Park. “I’m originally from Mexico and I just started living in Airdrie a year ago,” said organizer Lore Pérez. “I know we have this kind of event in Calgary and I wanted to try to bring the best of our culture for our children [to Airdrie].” After stumbling upon the Philippine Independence Day celebrations in Nose Creek Park June 10, Pérez said she knew she had to organize something similar. “I was able to attend Mexifest in Calgary and got to be closer with the vendors and with the performers and stuff,” she said. “I realized how important this is. Now that [my children are] older, there are things that I want them to enjoy, like mariachi and piñata and things like that.” Pérez booked Nose Creek Park and began organizing vendors and entertainment. The family-friendly event will feature food trucks, mariachi bands, activities for kids, face painting and other entertainment. Vendors selling Mexican wares of all kinds, as well as other goods, will also be set up in the park. “Anything that’s unique from Mexico [will be on sale],” Perez said. “This is an opportunity for people with a small business to…let people know they are out there.” Space for vendors is free and anyone interested in booking a table can email Pérez at [email protected] for more information. Volunteers are also needed to help with organizing the event and ensuring it runs smoothly, she added, and can contact her at the same email address. Pérez isn’t charging anyone to attend the event and said it’s her way of giving back. “There’s a lot of people out there who want to help for the benefit of the community,” she said. “It’s an amazing community and it’s time to give back a little bit, too.” The event runs from 12 to 5 p.m. More information is available on Facebook by searching Viva Mexico. “It’s something fun and it’s something we don’t see very often here,” Pérez said. “It’s a good time to make a fiesta.”
