Mighty machines come to APL

Last year’s Mighty Machines Day at Airdrie Public Library (APL) saw more than 700 people stop by the library and Main Street Square parking lot to see big stuff. It was so much fun, we’re doing it again this year, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Last year’s Mighty Machines Day at Airdrie Public Library (APL) saw more than 700 people stop by the library and Main Street Square parking lot to see big stuff.

It was so much fun, we’re doing it again this year, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 28.

As the name suggests, it’s a celebration of all those big, mechanical things that do the hard work that makes our neighbourhoods, city and province a great place to live.

Again, the entire APL parking lot will be closed and filled with all manner of jaw-dropping machinery.

EMS, RCMP, a bucket truck, a grain truck, a tractor, a city transit bus, a very cool ice resurfacer (think hockey arena), a 50-foot fire truck, a grader, a mini street sweeper, the Canadian Military Tribute Truck, classic cars, drones (they’ll be static), food trucks and even our own cute little APL van.

Supported by a generous donation from Brokerlink Insurance, the event is hosted in partnership with the City of Airdrie, the Airdrie Fire Department, Alberta Health Services, Airdrie RCMP, the Ag Society, Cervus Equipment, the Time Travellers (car club), the Airdrie Modelers Aircraft Society, Fortis, and Air 101.6 FM.

There will also be a variety of events taking place inside the library, including Truck Town, Paper Airplanes, Mario Kart races, cheek art and other exciting literacy and activity stations.

Please note, that while the library will be open for this event, our regular services will not be available.

Also happening at APL:

If you’re an aspiring poet, don’t forget about APL’s first Annual Poetry Contest, Poetry in Motion.

In partnership with the City of Airdrie, there are two categories, Open or Youth (ages 13 to 17). The winner in each category will receive an iPad, and selected poems will be displayed on Airdrie Transit buses in September for Alberta Culture Days.

Go to airdriepubliclibrary.ca for the entry form – but hurry, the contest closes Aug. 16.

For more information on all our programs and services, visit airdriepubliclibrary.ca, call 403-948-0600 or drop by the library for your free library card.
