“Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world,” said Louis Pasteur (1822-1895).

This quote by Pasteur, a French biologist, microbiologist and chemist known for his work in the field of vaccination and pasteurization, is apropos for Science Literacy Week – a celebration of science-based activities, powered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, that shines a light on Canadian scientists and science communicators.

Thanks to Let’s Talk Science and the City of Airdrie, the Airdrie Public Library (APL) are offering special programs designed to encourage children’s science literacy.

Let’s Talk Science is a registered Canadian charitable organization focused on education and skills development for Canadian children and youth through science, technology, engineering and mathematics-based programs.

Visit APL the Sept. 16 to 22, and check out our book display for some science you can take home. Plus, on Wednesday and Friday, join APL for three special events.

APL’s After School drop-in program Full STEAM Ahead (ages 7 and up) will feature science fun with the Airdrie Waste and Recycling Services Sept. 18 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Candy DNA will take place Sept. 20 from 3 to 4 p.m., and will explore the structure of DNA and base pairing using hands-on activities. Presented by Let’s Talk Science, this activity will engage students ages 8 to 13 by allowing them to construct their own DNA out of candy and toothpicks.

Angry Birds will follow from 4 to 5 p.m. Also presented by Let’s Talk Science, this program – designed for students from kindergarten to Grade 3 – allows students to experiment with the physics of projectiles by playing Angry Birds in real life.

Participants for both Friday programs must preregister online at the library’s website.

As the famous Pasteur said, science does bring light to the mysteries of the world, and APL is excited to be a part of that illumination.
