Active cases of COVID-19 in Airdrie have begun to rise once again, with 21 active cases in the city as of July 28, according to information posted on airdrie.ca. The city had reported as few as four active cases three weeks ago.
Provincial numbers are climbing as well – Alberta has 1,173 active cases of COVID-19 as of July 26. This compares to 697 active cases as of July 7.
By July 26, nearly three quarters of eligible Airdronians had received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to provincial immunization figures, while 62 per cent are fully vaccinated with two doses.
Provincially, Alberta has surpassed 75 per cent for first doses in eligible individuals, while nearly 64 per cent have had both shots.
With case numbers on the rise again – Alberta is back to reporting upwards of 100 new infections a day – Dr. Deena Hinshaw is urging young Albertan adults to get vaccinated.
"Fewer than half of Albertans ages 20 to 29 are fully vaccinated, a number we need to increase," Alberta's chief medical officer of health tweeted July 27.
Even as the COVID-19 testing positivity rate has increased to nearly two per cent on a seven day average, hospitalizations and intensive care admissions remain low in Alberta. As of July 26, according to provincial data, 82 Albertans are hospitalized with the virus and 21 are in the ICU.
