Renée E. Short, Barrister & Solicitor, opened the practice in the summer of 2014.

“I was working in Calgary, which was taking a lot of time from my family with the commute, and I wanted to be servicing the community that I live in. So, I opened my sole practice in Airdrie,” says Renée.

The firm has been going strong for 10 years; Renée credits several factors including her team.

“It’s all about the people around me, she smiles. “Rachelle, my assistant and account manager, worked with me in Calgary and she has been with me in Airdrie since January 2015. Family, friends, and community support are all important in running a successful business. Building relationships with clients has allowed me to maintain a strong client base.”

Renée builds rapport with her clients, ensuring caring and compassionate service while upholding fairness and the law.

For example, to help families with a much-needed but often procrastinated service, she is offering 25% off wills and estates packages for March 2024.

There are many great reasons to take advantage of this offer. Estate planning can be very complex. Here is how a lawyer can help.

  1. Legal Expertise: Wills and estates lawyers are knowledgeable about the laws and regulations governing wills, trusts, and estate planning in Alberta. They can ensure that your will is drafted according to the legal requirements, minimizing the risk of it being contested or invalidated.
  2. Customized Advice: A lawyer can provide personalized advice based on your specific financial and family situation. They can help you navigate complex family dynamics, inheritance tax implications, and other considerations to ensure your wishes are carried out effectively.
  3. Complex Estate Planning: For individuals with significant assets or complex family situations, such as blended families or business ownership, a lawyer can assist in creating comprehensive estate plans that address all relevant issues.
  4. Executor Support: If you've been appointed as an executor of an estate, a lawyer can guide you through the probate process, help manage legal responsibilities, and provide support during a potentially challenging time.
  5. Contesting or Defending Wills: In cases where a will is being contested or there are disputes among beneficiaries, a wills and estates lawyer can provide representation and legal support to protect your interests.
  6. Peace of Mind: Engaging a lawyer can provide peace of mind, knowing that your affairs are in order and your loved ones will be well-cared for according to your wishes.

Short Law is the ideal firm in Airdrie to help you navigate these challenges.

Renée is present for family and clients and also the community.

“We’ve been a long-time supporter of the Airdrie Food Bank,” she explains. “We ran a specific program from 2020 to 2023, providing notary services in lieu of food bank donations. I am also a member of the Christian Legal Fellowship, which advances human rights and constitutional challenges in all levels of court. Additionally, we have supported the Airdrie Health Foundation for several years.”

She and her team have been recognized for years of service for volunteering with the Calgary Legal Guidance Centre.

For women considering the field of law, she has some sage advice.

“Go for it! Be prepared for some challenges in the early years and make sure you have a strong support system in place. To female entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs, I say follow your dreams, work hard, and never give up.”

Renée says a very big thank you to, “My administrative assistant Rachelle Ortiz, my husband, family members and friends, and of course the clients who give me a purpose. I also thank the big network of other professionals that make operations go smoothly – other lawyers in the community, mediators, psychologists, financial advisors, realtors, couriers, etc.”

What comes next for Short Law?

“We’ll just keep on working hard for our clients and providing excellent service,” Renée concludes.
