Airdrie Fire Department to get defibrillators

City council has approved an amendment to the 2010 capital budget in order to supply the Airdrie Fire Department with five Automated External Defibrillators (AED) for $17,000.

City council has approved an amendment to the 2010 capital budget in order to supply the Airdrie Fire Department with five Automated External Defibrillators (AED) for $17,000.

With the AED’s on the way, the fire department will be adhering to National Fire Protection Association requirements and will provide “a first line of defence” for responding emergency personnel, according to Ken Hubbard, acting chief of the Airdrie Fire Department.

Airdrie Emergency Services changed to the Airdrie Fire Department on July 1, when the province took over ambulance service. As a result of the change, $124,000 of medical equipment was sold to Alberta Health Services.

Each AED costs $3,400 and will be funded through the City’s contingency fund.
