Bert Church High "shocked" by news of passing of popular drama teacher

Kevin Goodyear, 32, passed away on March 12.

A popular local drama teacher has passed away.

Kevin Goodyear, 32, passed away on March 12, but the announcement of his death did not appear on his Facebook page until March 20.

The circumstances surrounding the cause of his death are not known publicly.

Goodyear attended Medicine Hat College where he studied Drama Education and finished in 2011. He proceeded to study at University of Lethbridge where he finished in 2014.

He was a drama teacher at Bert Church High School.

A celebration of life for Goodyear will be held on April 6 at 2 p.m at the Bert Church Theatre in Airdrie. A post on his Facebook page notes, “There is no dress code, but if you wish to honour Kevin with something you wear, his favourite colour was bright blue.”

Kevin's family will be creating a scholarship in his memory at Bert Church High School, where Kevin spent his career.

For more information on the scholarship email [email protected].

In a statement shared with parents and students, Bert Church Principal Rob Makkreel said the school was saddened and “shocked” by the news of Goodyear’s passing, and extra grief support would be available to students impacted by his death.

“We recognize that Kevin’s passing will impact our students, specifically those who have been taught by him,” said Makkreel. “Our student services and administrative team are available today and throughout the week for any student who needs some extra support. We will also have division support available.”
