The City of Airdrie is hoping residents will help prevent the spread of a pesky weed this summer.
Last week, the municipality issued a social media post letting residents know there has been an uptick in the amount of black henbane spotted around Airdrie.
"This summer, we have seen an increase in black henbane growing throughout the city," the City's post stated. "Black henbane is most commonly found in poorly established landscapes or where soil has been disrupted."
Black henbane is considered a noxious weed in Alberta. Plants can mass-produce seeds, irritate skin and can be toxic if eaten.
The Cit's post went on to state black henbane can be identified by its tall, thick stem, large light green leaves, and showy yellow flowers with purple veins and throats.
Anyone with black henbane on their property is reminded to pull the plant from the root, bag it, and dispose of it in their garbage.
"Use caution to avoid skin contact," the City stated, adding that anyone who comes across black henbane in public spaces in Airdrie are encouraged to report it to the Parks department at 403.948.8400.
