The City of Airdrie recently released drought preparedness plans for 2024 that urge residents and local businesses to conserve water.

In a statement released on its website, the City said that it is taking “proactive steps to enhance drought preparedness amidst current drought conditions affecting Airdrie and the surrounding region.”

The City said it’s collaborating with neighbouring municipalities to monitor the drought situation and have developed comprehensive readiness plans for the City, local businesses and residents.

To prove it’s taking drought preparedness seriously, the City said it’s conducting evaluations of water usage at City facilities and is reviewing the water bylaw to make sure it promotes water conservation measures.

“With the conditions we’re seeing around Alberta right now, it’s important that we all play a part in conserving water,” said Mayor Peter Brown in a statement released on the City’s website.

“The City aims to lead by example, reviewing and adjusting our water use, and we encourage local businesses and residents to do the same,” continued Brown. “Together, we can make a significant impact.”

According to the City’s website, aside from drought mitigation, saving water can also save residents money. Less water usage results in a smaller water bill and if the community makes a concerted effort to reduce water usage that reduces the frequency of costly new upgrades to water and sewage facilities.

The City has set up pages on their website that outlines their water conservation efforts which residents can use to also receive updates on the drought situation and changes to the water bylaw.

The City also said that given the potential for continued dry weather, they advise that outdoor watering restrictions and other conservation measures may become necessary in 2024.
