County to conduct Sharp Hill traffic study

Rocky View County is looking for input from residents about traffic concerns in the community of Sharp Hill, located southeast of Airdrie.

The move was motivated by a number of complaints fielded about the volume and speed of traffic in the area.

“We are looking at people’s input about what their concerns are, and what measures we should take,” said Division 7 Councillor Lois Habberfield. “Some people like speed bumps and others don’t. We don’t want to do something people don’t want.”

The online survey was based after a model the County recently implemented in Springbank, where residents were asked to respond to a series of questions in the privacy of their own homes.

Data from those questions was compiled. If multiple surveys were done in a single home to skew the results, the County was able to discount them. Surveys completed by people living outside the community were also flagged.

Traffic counts were taken and compiled to create a large pool of data for consideration before County council.

All the information helped council make an informed decision about a possible speed reduction in the community.

“It was forward looking,” said Habberfield. “I thought, ‘why not do the same thing in Sharp Hill?’”

The Sharp Hill survey was put online on Aug. 24 and will be taken down on Sept. 8.

The results will be compiled and considered when council is asked to make a decision about what, if any, traffic calming measures are needed in the community.

Community members have raised a number of concerns of drivers shortcutting and speeding through the high-end acreage community on their way to CrossIron Mills mall or Costco.

There have also been a number of complaints of excess noise at night, which seems to be a result of motorcyclists in the area, added Habberfield.

Some possible traffic calming measures include reducing the speed limit from its current 50 km/h or adding speed bumps or rumble strips. Another possibility is to increase enforcement in the area.
