Rocky View County’s bylaw service is experiencing some staffing shortages.

As a result, officers have not been providing a visible presence in town since January.

Due to the reduction in service, the County has not been billing the Town of Irricana for the service.

Interim Chief Administrative Officer Alvin Melton assured council that he will monitor the situation.

In related news, Councillor Larry Martin reported that several youths vandalized the vending machine at the Recreation Centre as well as a chalkboard in the building. They are currently suspended from using the centre.

Melton reported that a health inspector has completed tests at the Centennial Centre and the results should be in for Irricana council’s next meeting, July 18. Concerns were raised earlier in the summer about water damage and mold in the basement of the building.

Martin announced there will be a one-evening music festival at the recreation centre this fall, featuring three bands. Music will range from reggae to popular music from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s.

Town staff has been exploring the possibility of providing utility payment options.

Residents are being asked to participate in a poll on the Town’s website (www.irricana.com) asking for residents’ opinions on monthly billing as opposed to the current bi-monthly billing.

Council signed off on an alley repair between 3rd and 4th Street and between 2nd and 3rd Avenue.

The project will proceed by placing a swale on the privately-owned land to drain the stormwater that collects in the alley on to 3rd Street, where it can be absorbed by the storm sewer system.

The cost is expected to be about $16,000.

Council unanimously agreed to hire Uber Roofing to replace the Community Hall roof at a cost of $35,000. Administration was asked to check into any possible warranty on the existing roof and to ascertain what type of warranty will accompany the Uber bid.

The project will be paid from the 2011 provincial MSI grant allocation.

Council has offered interim CAO Alvin Melton a full five days per week until Aug. 31, with an opportunity to extend his contract until a permanent CAO is hired.

The next meeting of council will be July 18 at 7 p.m. in council chambers. The public is welcome.
