The Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) is now offering disaster recovery assistance for individuals and businesses that were affected by heavy rainfall from May 25 to 29, which caused flooding and seepage in Rocky View County.
The 2011 Southwestern Alberta Disaster Recovery Program will provide assistance to help residents, businesses and organizations recover non-insurable property to pre-disaster condition. The disaster recovery program also assists disaster victims with evacuation costs, clean-up and emergency accommodations.
Those wishing to apply for disaster assistance can do so in person from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 26 and 27 at the Disaster Recovery Program registration centre. The centre is located at the Centre Street Church, 3900 2 Street N.E. in Calgary. Applications can also be completed over the phone by calling 1-888-671-1111. Applicants are required to provide a piece of government issued ID and may provide a letter from insurance company confirming losses are uninsurable, as well as a list of damaged items.
Rocky View County Fire Services has completed an investigation into a fire that occurred east of Calgary at Sparks Egg Farm on June 7.
The fire has been ruled unsuspicious, but according to Rocky View Fire Services, no exact cause can be determined due to the extreme conditions of the fire. Four 180-foot barns containing 30,000 laying hens were burned down during the fire, but none of the farm’s 80 employees were harmed. The damage caused by the fire is estimated to be $2.25 million.
