FortisAlberta awarded École Edwards School with a safety star grant, in recognition of its commitment to providing a safe learning environment for the students, teachers and staff on Oct. 21.

The school was given $2,500, which can be used for any school improvement project or educational initiative.

“We are so happy to name École Edwards a safety star school to acknowledge all the good work they are doing to keep their students, teachers and staff safe,” said Kate George, FortisAlberta communications advisor.

“They have a lot of pride in their school and it shines through in how they take care of one another.”

FortisAlberta launched the safety star school grant program earlier this year and invited schools to apply for the $2,500 grant by demonstrating how their facilities, programming and philosophies are committed to the safety and overall well being of the school community.

A panel of judges evaluated the applications and awarded 10 safety star grants to schools throughout FortisAlberta’s service territory.

“We were impressed by the innovative programs some schools have developed to address important issues like bullying, accessibility and first aid,” said George.

“We hope that other schools and communities will be inspired by our 2011 safety stars and look for ways to make their own learning environments safer places for everyone.”
