Airdrie residents with a green thumb are encouraged to take part in an open house for new community garden space.
The City of Airdrie Parks Department and the Airdrie Horticultural Society will be hosting the informal open house on June 9 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Rotary Room in Genesis Place.
“Residents interested in community gardening are welcome to attend and learn more about future plans for community gardening in Airdrie,” said Michael McAllister, community developer at the City of Airdrie.
“There is currently a waiting list for plots in Airdrie’s only community garden located in Sagewood.”
At the open house the City and the Horticultural Society will provide information on the proposed sites and look at how to best manage any future plots.
“We want to first outline where these proposed plots might be located and then investigate what the best way is for us to move the idea of having more community gardens forward,” said McAllister.
There are two potential sites for new gardens: one in Big Springs and the other near Nose Creek Elementary School. The third option is to expand the existing site in Sagewood.
“By gathering this information the City and residents can work towards the expansion of community gardens in Airdrie,” said Rhonda Deaville–Erb, parks planner.
Community gardens are an Airdrie Horticultural Society initiative that is supported by the City of Airdrie and a number of local businesses.
