Handi Bus Society proposing pilot program

Councillor Larry Martin gave a report on a recent Handi Bus meeting he attended in Beiseker. The Rocky View Regional Handi Bus Society is proposing a pilot program to transport Beiseker and Irricana seniors to Airdrie for shopping, doctors visits and other needs. Initially the bus will only run once every couple of months to gauge usage, but could become more frequent if need dictates. Fare rates are yet to be determined.

Chief Administrative Officer Alvin Melton presented council with two new policies for consideration. The first one dealt with the Town’s ability to enter private property when it becomes unsightly or hazardous.

The second was a draft of the Town’s communication policy dealing with information flow. Both policies were forwarded to the policy review committee for recommendations.

Mayor Josh Taylor gave a report on a recent Aqua 7 Water Commission meeting he attended. There could be an increase in water usage, he noted, if Wheatland County were to join the Commission.

Rockyford will need an upgraded plant in about five years. It is hoped that more users could eventually result in lower water rates.

• Melton informed council that staff has been monitoring the usage of water and power at the campground. The numbers will be analyzed and council will be updated on cost recovery options.

• The Town will implement a Visa/Mastercard pay system.

• Staff have had several conversations with members of the library board, and analyzed the possibility of the Centennial Centre as a library location. It was determined the building is not appropriate for a variety of reasons. Further analysis into the lot on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and Second Street has shown the size of the lot is sufficient to accommodate a library.

• House assessments in Irricana are being reviewed. Melton’s report noted it is important to remember that the Town has absolutely no influence on assessment and residents are encouraged to appeal their assessment if they feel it is unfair. More information is available at the Town office.

The next meeting of council will be Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
