Karin Lowen is hoping to bring a national title home to Irricana and add to the community’s long-standing baseball legacy.

She was a member of Team Alberta at the Women’s Canadian Slo-Pitch Championship just outside London, Ont., Aug. 9-13.

Eight teams – four from Ontario, one from the Northwest Territories, one from B.C. and Team Alberta – competed for the national title at Slo-Pitch City in Dorchester, Ont., about 20 kilometres east of London.

Alberta had a 4W-2L record going into its final round-robin game on Aug. 12, and the top four teams will advanced to the playoff round (after the Rocky View Weekly had gone to press).

“We’ve been doing pretty well and we’re hoping to win today to ensure we advance to the playoffs in first or second place,” Lowen said. “If we win it, we’ll be in for sure and that would be the preferred way.”

The third baseman, who also plays in the Irricana mixed slo-pitch league, was nine out 12 at the plate during the team’s first six games.

Team Alberta, which is comprised of players from across the province, had to qualify for this tournament last year.

They’ve only played in three tournaments together, but camaraderie among her teammates has come naturally despite the lack of experience together, Lowen said.

“It’s great bunch of ladies on our team and everyone has been working really hard,” she said.

“The atmosphere has also been fantastic, as the men’s national tournament is also on and there has been lots of fans and night games under the lights.”
