A local radio station will be providing $13,000 in scholarships over a six-year period for graduating students in Bert Church, Bow Valley, George McDougall and Cochrane High who plan to enter the field of music, journalism or other artistic studies at Canadian educational institutes.
“When we came into the Cochrane and Airdrie areas, our biggest mandate was to be local first and that means giving back to the local community,” said Bruce Daniels, general manager of The Range FM.
“We are so close to a major centre and it is easy for people to turn the dial to something other than us. We need to have that local edge so people turn to us first.”
Superintendent of Schools Greg Bass thanked Daniels for his contribution to learning.
“Thank you for helping us instil the value of other pursuits for our students,” he said. “So often, we focus on academics and this is a recognition of excellence in artistic studies, which are very important as well.”
“Thank you for participating in the success of our students,” said Trustee Helen Clease.
The following students have been awarded the Tiessen Media Scholarship to date:
• Megan Robertson, Bow Valley High School (2009)
• Cassandra Noble, George McDougall High School (2009)
• Jeremy Finch, Bert Church High School (2009)
• Tess Cowie, Cochrane High (2010)
