Airdrie’s Meals on Wheels is looking for new volunteer drivers to help those in need get access to affordable, nutritional food.
“You can make a difference one meal at a time,” said Sharon Rode, member of the board of directors for Meals on Wheels. “If you can spare two hours once a week or every other month, please consider volunteering.”
Meals on Wheels has been serving Airdrie for 28 years delivering meals to the elderly, disabled and others in need every weekday. The meals consist of soup, a sandwich, salad, entrées and dessert and are prepared at Cedarwood Station. The organization helps those with health issues and senior citizens remain independent in their own homes.
Barb and Don Pike are volunteers with Meals on Wheels.
“We visited the Meals on Wheels booth at the Airdrie Home and Garden Show and I said to Don, ‘when we retire, let’s volunteer there,’” said Pike.
“We retired seven years ago and have been delivering for five years now. It’s a very rewarding feeling.”
Corinne Schneider heard about volunteering with Meals on Wheels from Volunteer Airdrie.
“I started delivering meals in February of this year,” she said. “I deliver once a week, it doesn’t take a lot of my time.”
Jen Corbett, a mother with small children, said, “I had a relative in England receiving Meals on Wheels. It helped him stay in his own home. That’s when I decided I could volunteer here in Airdrie.”
Volunteer drivers pick up the meals and deliver them to the clients’ homes and some have been delivering meals since the inception of the non-profit organization. The total time spent delivering each day is about one to two hours, said Rode.
Florence Tester, a former driver and past member of the board of directors now receives the service.
“My meal arrives before noon on the days I choose,” she said.
“The volunteer drivers are always so cheerful.”
