Criminal charges are pending against two different drivers as a result of separate incidents that occurred on Highway 2 near Airdrie.

The first incident occurred on Nov. 15 at 10:55 a.m., when the driving pattern of a red Chevrolet Malibu, heading northbound on Highway 2 towards Airdrie, was extremely erratic, causing concerned motorists to call 9-1-1.

Before responding officers could intercept the vehicle, it collided with the cable-barrier in the median of Highway 2 just north of Yankee Valley Blvd. in Airdrie.

Police determined that the 47-year-old male driver from Acme was exhibiting signs of drug impairment, resulting in his arrest.

The second incident occurred on Nov. 16, just after 1 p.m., when witnesses reported seeing a grey Dodge Ram, travelling northbound on Highway 2 south of Airdrie, weaving in and out of traffic and narrowly missing other vehicles.

Members of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit intercepted the vehicle and noted the 20-year-old male driver from Manitoba exhibited signs of being impaired by alcohol. He was arrested at the scene.

“The common theme in these two cases is that both of these individuals were reported to the police by alert motorists,” said Provincial Sheriff Jason Graw.

“While we do have traffic officers patrolling Highway 2 seven days per week, we obviously can’t be everywhere. Our goal is to make the highways safer for everyone, and with the help of the public, we were able to do just that. The more eyes we have out on the road looking for impaired drivers, the more of them we are going to be able to catch.”

Criminal charges are pending in both incidents.

RCMP are also reminding drivers that they can expect to see several Alberta Checkstops as the holiday season approaches in the coming weeks.

Airdrie RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in locating 27-year-old Katie Marie Holbeck.

The Calgary resident was reported as a missing person on Nov. 16.

She was last seen leaving for her lunch break from her employer at CrossIron Mills mall in Balzac, just after noon on Nov. 14.

Holbeck is described as 5’5”, 82 kg, with brown shoulder-length hair and brown eyes.

She has a piercing in her left eyebrow, a tattoo of a cross on her neck and a tattoo of a star on the back of her ear.

She may be wearing glasses with brown frames and was last seen wearing an olive green jacket, jeans and a white blouse.

Police do not suspect foul play.

On Nov. 11 at about 4:30 p.m., Cochrane RCMP responded to an assault in progress on the Morley Reserve.

The initial investigation revealed that a group of individuals in a stolen Dodge Caravan engaged in a physical altercation, resulting in injuries.

While the van attempted to flee the scene, three people were struck and injured.

The van then left the roadway and struck a tree. Four people were transported to hospital by ground ambulance and two by STARS Air Ambulance.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this incident.

Fergus Hunter, 19, from Morley has been charged assault, assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, possession of stolen property, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and two counts of breach of recognizance.

He was scheduled to appear in Cochrane Provincial Court on Nov. 17.

Charges are pending against three other people involved in the incident.

If you have information about any unsolved crime, contact your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
