A pick-up truck pulling a holiday trailer rolled over on May 26 at about 10 p.m. on Highway 2 just south of the Carstairs overpass. The two occupants in the pickup truck were not injured. Emergency crews had to be cautious with the wreck, as there were two full propane tanks attached to the trailer – one of which was damaged in the crash. The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for about two hours. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but police believe road conditions were a factor. Roads were wet, with steady rain, moderate wind gusts and reduced visibility at the time of the collision.

On May 30 at about 6:30 p.m., Airdrie rural RCMP responded to the sudden death of a 43-year-old woman on an acreage northeast of CrossIron Mills mall.

Cst. Rob Frizzell said the death was deemed 100 per cent non-suspicious in nature.

“Upon attending the residence, we were notified by EMS that the female suffered injuries while working on her vehicle,” he said.

“We believe she had the vehicle jacked up and something slipped or malfunctioned causing the car to crush her. There is no reason to believe foul play was involved. It was simply an accidental death.”

Frizzell reminded residents to take precautions when working on their vehicles.

“If you are doing home maintenance or working on your car, ensure the vehicle is properly jacked up and use wood blocks to ensure it doesn’t fall on you,” he said.

RCMP is not releasing the name of the deceased at this time.

On May 25 at about 10 a.m., a farm crew just outside of Strathmore witnessed a person throwing something out of the car while still moving.

They suspected it to be an animal, and when they searched the ditch, they found a small, four-week-old, black kitten. The kitten was severely injured and later succumbed to its injuries at the Apex Animal Clinic. No other kittens were found.

“The kitten died due to impact at a high speed,” said Jennifer Fitzpatrick, Tails to Tell Animal Shelter manager.

“He was left to suffer. This is absolutely horrible.”

The vehicle was seen near Highway 209 and Range Road 265 and is described as a red, older-style van driven by a man with a woman passenger.

Fitzpatrick said the woman threw the cat from the vehicle.

Courtney Kelly of the Tails to Tell Animal Shelter said the organization is offering a reward of more than $1,000 to anybody with information about the person who killed the kitten.

“We’re in contact with the authorities and an investigation is underway,” she said.

“(The kitten) does not have to die in vain.”

On May 27 at about 8:20 p.m., the Airdrie RCMP and the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit responded to multiple complaints of an erratic driver travelling northbound on Highway 2.

Initial 911 reports stated that a white, 2005 Dodge Ram truck was erratically changing lanes, speeding and driving on the shoulder and meridian.

It is believed that the driver of the vehicle lost control and spun around three times in the northbound lane.

Police were able to locate the suspect vehicle in the Kings Heights neighbourhood and arrest the driver without incident.

“We are asking anyone who saw this man driving or saw him on foot in the Kings Heights area to please contact us,” said Frizzell.

The victim suffered minor injuries, but did not required medical attention. The victim was eventually able to retrieve his wallet after the suspect threw it away.

“We are asking anyone who is out walking to be vigilant,” said Frizzell.

The victim told police that he was walking by a gentleman on a park bench who appeared to be talking to himself, when the victim didn’t respond to the man, he was attacked.

“If you see someone who you believe is either intoxicated or suffering from a mental health issue, please feel free to call the police and we will come and check it out.”
