RCMP stopped a stolen BMW near Didsbury on Highway 2, resulting in the arrest of three youth allegedly connected with a spate of break-ins, July 12.
The Airdrie break-ins took place over a five-day span between July 8 and 12. There were also break-ins during the same time in Calgary.
Two boys and one girl, all under 18, were taken into custody. The Airdrie girl and Calgary boy both have 26 charges pending against them while the second Calgary boy faces 16 charges.
“They were already known to police,” said Const. Robert Frizzell.
Calgary Police Service carried out a search warrant at the residence of one of the teens and discovered stolen property in excess of $50,000.
RCMP is crediting cooperation between Airdrie and Calgary with the arrest of the teenagers.
“This is a great example of interdepartmental cooperation,” said Frizzell. “Criminals don’t recognize borders and jurisdictions so having this interdepartmental communications is a necessity to stop cross-border crime.”
Airdrie’s General Investigation Section and the Calgary Serious Habitual Offender Program worked together to make the arrests and recover the stolen property.
Stolen goods included flat-screen televisions, laptops, video game systems, jewelry, cell phones, iPods, digital cameras and various currencies.
Some property has not been recovered.
“We believe that was either fenced on the street or traded for drugs,” said Frizzell.
In one break-in, an 18-year-old female occupant of the house confronted one of the suspects. The suspect fled while the female contacted police. She was not harmed during the incident.
Police are reminding residents to close garage doors, remove garage door openers from vehicles, lock the man door from the garage to the house, lock doors and windows and activate home-alarm systems. No court date has been set and all three suspects remain in police custody.
