RCMP warns spring storm may come with 'treacherous road conditions'

Southern and central Alberta RCMP detachments are preparing for the potential of a spring storm, which may come with treacherous road conditions in the upcoming 48 hours.

Traditionally, the region between Airdrie and Innisfail on Highway 2 has been an area of great concern, police pointed out in a news release issued Tuesday afternoon.

A special weather statement is in effect for the Airdrie - Cochrane - Olds - Sundre area due to the snow expected to fall.

A snowfall warning is in effect for the Red Deer - Ponoka - Innisfail - Stettler area which also includes Bowden.

A warning is issued in Alberta when 10 centimetres (cm) or more of snow falls within 12 hours or less.

Environment Canada noted in its alerts that 15 - 25 cm of snow is expected in the coming days, starting Tuesday evening.

"If you do not have to travel, please stay home," police advised in the news release.

"If you must travel, RCMP want to advise motorists to use extreme caution, slow down and maintain an increased distance between yourself and other drivers."
