Rocky View County gives Langdon $10,000

Langdon residents may soon notice the community’s main street being spruced up as Rocky View County council approved a $10,000 Business Centre and Commercial Corridor Enhancement (BCCCE) grant, Oct. 11.

Langdon residents may soon notice the community’s main street being spruced up as Rocky View County council approved a $10,000 Business Centre and Commercial Corridor Enhancement (BCCCE) grant, Oct. 11.

The Langdon Community Association submitted the application, and the money will pay for concrete planters and benches, trees and landscape materials.

“The community has been continuing to try to get Langdon looking sharper,” said Reeve Rolly Ashdown.

“This is a continuation of their previous efforts.”

The hamlet of 4,000 is home to a number of businesses including a deli, a pharmacy, a gas station and pet store. The main street has a 1908 theme, a nod to the community’s heyday in the early 1900s.

This is the first time the community has received the grant.

Councillor Lois Habberfield raised some concerns about the location of the benches and planters, saying none should go in the park that runs adjacent to Langdon’s main street.

“The idea is to beautify main street,” she said. “If it is a way of for the community to enhance the park, that is eligible for recreation dollars. I just want to make sure the money comes from the right source.”

David Kalinchuk, Rocky View’s economic development manager, assured council that staff would specify the money was spent beautifying the correct location within the hamlet.

Reeve Rolly Ashdown said the money would help enhance the community’s adopt-a-planter program, in which businesses and residents take over care of the planters for the growing season.

The BCCCE grant program was implemented in 2006 to provide money to enhance business districts in the county.

Each year, eligible business groups and business associations can apply. Up to $10,000 in funding can be awarded to a group to assist with capital expenditures. The funding is awarded as part of Rocky View County’s Economic Development departmental operations.
