Rocky View Schools details three-year plan

Rocky View School’s trustees and administrators have made their three-year plan more easily understandable for parents.

Rocky View School’s trustees and administrators have made their three-year plan more easily understandable for parents.

The plan, first approved in June, features four major goals, 16 outcomes, 60 performance measures and 64 strategies that centre on meeting individual student needs.

“To build greater awareness of the plan and Rocky View Schools’ pursuit of becoming a 21st century learning organization, an abbreviated paper version has been developed,” said Bass.

Bass stressed the third of four goals — relating to instructional design challenges and engaging students — as the most important.

“Goal three is really the catalyst for our shift that we need to make and we’re calling for, and we’re poised to make from a cognitive organization to a constructivist one,” said Bass.

“I’m excited and proud of the plan. From the boardroom to the classroom, this plan is what will drive our efforts over the next three years.”

In order to develop all the goals and outcomes, the school spent five months working with more than 1,000 parents, students, staff, business leaders and community members.

As part of the plan’s progress, two trustees were asked to work on a three-year plan template to be tabled at the Oct. 6 board.

The template will help advance the plan along and quarterly updates will be given on the plan’s progress. Ward 1 trustee Norma Lang and Ward 2 trustee Bev LaPeare both volunteered for the committee.

The school division produced 2,500 glossy poster-style pamphlets at a cost of $1 each. The information was then distributed to every staff member, school council and educational partner within the school division.

Eggerer also said she was glad to see the information not dressed up with fancy words so everyone can understand it.

“Sometimes I worry that we get caught up in a lot of glossy words… and we lose the essence of what we have,” she said.

Other trustees generally supported the new plan and commented on the easy-to-understand pamphlet with all the goals the division plans to incorporate by 2014.

“This is such a nice, succinct summation. I also like the fact that it’s so compact,” said Bruce Pettigrew, board chair.

Ward 4 Trustee Helen Clease agreed with Pettigrew and said it will be easy to circulate in the school community.

“This gives them a really good taste of what we’re about,” she said.

The report features more quantitative learning initiatives and Ward 3 trustee Don Thomas said it’s a step in the right direction from the previous three-year plan.

“We’re in a time of change right now,” said LaPeare.

“This really packs power, there’s a punch there. I think it will be well received by the public.”

Bass said this style of learning would help prepare kids as they enter a world that is constantly evolving and changing.
