More heavy rain and large hail stones may be on the way for Airdrie and Rocky View County this afternoon.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Airdrie, Crossfield, Bottrel, Madden, Cochrane, Chestermere, Dalroy, Dalemead and Calgary shortly before 3 p.m. July 18.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain," the release stated.

Thunderstorms have developed in Central and Southern Alberta, according to the release, and will continue to move east towards the Saskatchewan border through the day."

"Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops," Environment Canada stated. "Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads."

The release reminded residents "lightning kills and injures Canadians every year," and urged Albertans to go indoors during thunderstorms.

More details on the alert are available here.
