The Airdrie RCMP Rural Detachment is reporting that seven horses stolen near Acme and Kneehill County have been recovered.
According to a Facebook post by the horses’ owner, Brenden Ramsay, the horses were initially taken by perpetrators unknown on Nov. 14th between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Ramsey confirmed the would-be horse thieves had damaged property in order to get at the horses. Ramsay hoped a witness might have seen someone with a cattle trailer in the area at the time of the theft.
“I just got home and all our horses are gone,” Ramsay initially posted. “It looks like they were stolen, not escaped. There’s damage to fences and gates not horse related.”
An Airdrie RCMP spokesperson, Cst. Jennifer Weedmark, confirmed to Rocky View Weekly today that the stolen horses had been found on a nearby neighbour’s property. The RCMP do not suspect the neighbour of having stolen the horses, she confirmed, as that neighbour had called police as soon as he found them. Weedmark confirmed that the RCMP suspected the horses had rather been dumped on the property by the thieves, likely to divert attention from themselves.
Weedmark said the RCMP is still investigating and has some persons of interest in the case, but is still requesting the public’s assistance with information regarding the case.
