Trustees debate facility's name change

Rocky View Schools’ trustees had a short meeting, Sept. 15, to discuss the name of a facility and its new calendar.

As the new learning facility in Chestermere is now finished, the school board was tasked with naming the new building.

The building, which will house Rocky View Learning Connections and Rocky View’s Adult Learning and Student Support Staff, was proposed to be named Chestermere Community Learning Centre, as put forth by Superintendent of Schools Greg Bass.

Area trustee Bev LaPeare was the first to speak to the issue and did not endorse the name because it sounded too exclusive.

“When I look at the Chestermere Community Learning Centre, in my opinion, that reflects just our community,” she said. “But it’s going to offer education to Indus, Langdon, Conrich — all of the surrounding areas who want to participate in that kind of program.”

She recommended the facility be called RVS’ Community Learning Centre, which trustees agreed was a suitable name.

Ward 4 trustee Helen Clease wondered whether the name change would be official or just on the sign.

Bass told her it would be used not only on signage, but also letterheads, RVS’ website as well as the school’s personal website.

Ward 1 trustee Norma Lang said the change is important to highlight time spent developing the school division’s name.

“It honours and really puts forward the hard work people have done to build the RVS brand,” she said.

Later it was determined that Airdrie and Cochrane’s similar facilities will also undergo a name change reflective of the one in Chestermere.

The changes were passed unanimously.

The school division will be sending out three drafts of its 2012-13 school calendar to parents. All the drafts are included to show nuances in an effort to gain public input.

All three options have school beginning on Sept. 4, a two-week break at Christmas and end on June 26 for elementary and middle schools while high schools end June 27.
