A local girl is this year’s 2D Youth Champion at the Irvine Tack & Trailers Barrel Racing Series in Crossfield.

Angela Cambruzzi, 16, won the championship with her 11-year-old quarter horse Annie in a time of 19.0 seconds.

“I am really happy,” said Cambruzzi, who lives on an acreage east of Airdrie. “I have only been training her (Annie) for the past seven months to do barrel racing, so for us to win this is pretty big.”

Cambruzzi, a student at St. Martin de Porres, earned her spot in the finals through two previous performances on July 31 and Aug. 1. Judges averaged the racer’s times and the two top riders were chosen to compete.

Cambruzzi, who was Crossfield’s 2009 Pete Knight Rodeo Princess, earned about $100 and a belt buckle for her top placing.

Although as a former member of Pony Club and an English show jumping competitor for eight years she is no stranger to equine competition, this is Cambruzzi’s first year barrel racing.

It was also her horse’s first time in a rodeo competition, and, according to Cambruzzi, Annie loved it.

Cambruzzi plans to continue barrel racing, possibly making it a career.

“I like the rodeo scene more, it is more relaxed,” said Cambruzzi, adding that it was her stint as rodeo princess that ignited her passion for barrel racing.

“I think it (barrel racing) is enjoyable and my horse is really good at it.”
