W.H. Croxford football team still undefeated, ranked second in Alberta

The Cavaliers' strong performances have caught the attention of Football Alberta, who have the west Airdrie school currently ranked second in their list of top-10 Tier II teams.

Enjoying their best-ever start to a campaign, W.H. Croxford High School's football team is still unbeaten as they prepare for the last two games of their 2022 Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) regular season.

Croxford won their fourth straight RVSA game on Sept. 17, downing the Springbank Phoenix 31-10 at Calgary's Rundle College. The result means the Cavaliers are currently top of the table in the RVSA, having outscored opponents 125-34 this season.

But they'll have some of their toughest match-ups in the lead-up to the RVSA playoffs next month. Following a two-week bye from regular-season action, the Cavs will face their cross-town rivals the Bert Church Chargers in the annual 'Turkey Bowl' game on Oct. 7. They'll then face the 3-0 (and six-time consecutive title-defending) Cochrane Cobras in their last game of the regular season, on Oct. 14.

Mustangs and Chargers vie for top 3

Meanwhile, Airdrie's other two public high-school football programs are hoping to climb the table and challenge for top spots in the RVSA standings. The George McDougall Mustangs currently sport a 1-1 record, while the Bert Church Chargers have a 1-2 record.

George McDougall has already played two exhibition games this season – against teams from Grande Prairie and Strathmore – and have won both. The Mustangs are currently ranked fifth in the province by Football Alberta, and will look to be at their best as they head to Cochrane to face the Cobras for their next league game on Sept. 23. The Cobras recently enjoyed a decisive 54-3 victory over the Bow Valley Bobcats on Sept. 16, in the annual battle between the two Cochrane-based sides.

The Chargers (1-2) have a win sandwiched between two defeats so far this season, and are coming off a 32-27 defeat to the Chestermere Lakers on Sept. 16. Bert Church will look to get back to winning ways when they travel to Rundle College in Calgary on Sept. 24 to face the still-winless Springbank Phoenix.
