Hello, my name is Scott Rowan, and I am excited to announce that I am the summer intern for the Airdrie City View and Rocky View Weekly. I am looking forward to telling the stories of these beautiful communities over the next five months.

I was born and raised in Calgary, and I came to love storytelling at age six through comics and free-hand drawing. Whether it be Star Wars, Marvel, or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I spent most of my time making up my own versions of the stories or characters that I consumed.

My comics eventually faded into original science fiction stories when I was 11 years old, and I was convinced that I was going to become a fiction author for my career. However, an unexpected passion for sports rapidly changed my vision.

I still remember that April recess in grade six when my friends convinced me to play street hockey after years of athletic disinterest, and all it took for me to fall in love with the game was to strap on the pads.

As a beginner hockey goalie but still a massive nerd, I became obsessed with hockey history and subsequently the NHL season at the time. My friends and family encouraged me to continue playing and learning, and my eyes widened at the prospect of being a sports journalist.

Through junior high and high school I developed my writing with the goal of getting into Mount Royal University’s journalism program, and I discovered a passion for online content creation with video games that further fed my drive along the way.

I began at Mount Royal during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic which greatly limited the traditional hands-on nature of journalism, but I fell deeper in love with storytelling as restrictions were lifted and I conducted my first in-person interviews at the rink.

Now, I am gearing up for my final year with the goal of sharpening my reporting and widening my repertoire of skills before I graduate. I want to get out of my comfort zone and properly dive into all that reporting has to offer.

I am so thrilled to have this opportunity to report and learn more about Rocky View County and Airdrie this summer. Thank you for giving me the privilege to report about your lives and the events that matter to you.
