LETTER: How will Alberta spend its surplus?

Dear editor,

It's the billion-dollar question: when I vote in the Alberta provincial election on May 29, I would like to be an informed voter. I would like to know by May 15 at the latest what the government surplus of over $1 billion, newly established in the recent capital budget, is going to be spent on.

Is this $1 billion going to be used to help create a provincial police force? Are the details of a previously brought-up provincial pension plan going to be announced? Are those orphan wells going to disappear due to government payments to oil and gas companies? We've already seen Calgary receive an extra budget bonus by being rewarded a new arena deal.

Recent news reports have mentioned the plan for this year's budget surplus won't be fully decided until after the election because "more study is needed."

Well, if more study is required, do it now. That way, we voters can be told by May 15 what we need to know.

In my view, that $1 billion surplus should go toward some new English language schools for Rocky View Schools.
