At a Rocky View County (RVC) Governance Committee meeting this past week, committee members heard a presentation from representatives of the City of Airdrie about the City’s Northeast Regional Park, which is slated for Phase One construction in May.

According to a report presented to the committee, the City of Airdrie reached out to the County in January to discuss potential County involvement, and interest in, the development of the new 185 acre park in northeast Airdrie.

The report stated that the City, while constructing and maintaining the proposed park on its own, may, “look for support from the County in the future, but wanted to share the park concept and request feedback as to how the project might benefit county residents.”

In 2022, the City of Airdrie asked the regional community, which include County residents, what they would like to see in the proposed regional park through what the City called the Recreation Needs Assessment. Airdrie city council chose a theme of “Organized Sport and Civic/Events/Arts.”

The theme proposed to accommodate the need for sport amenities and an outdoor gathering space for the community.

The City’s Thematic Spatial Concept for the park, which was submitted alongside the committee report, confirmed that 45 per cent of the park will be reserved for “natural spaces'', while 27 per cent of the total park acreage will be maintained for organized sports. 10 per cent of the park's space will be designated for tourism, while another 10 per cent will be reserved for civic, cultural, art, and festival purposes.

According to Justine Berger, who represented the City of Airdrie at the committee meeting on March 13, the revised park concept scheme will be presented to Airdrie council on April 2.

While no dollars are on the table yet, committee members were pleased to receive the information from Berger about the park plans, and some even congratulated the City of Airdrie.

“I think this is a really good plan,” said Division 4 Coun. Samanntha Wright.

Division 2 Coun and Deputy Reeve Don Kochan, who chairs the Governance Committee, also voiced his support for the City of Airdrie.

“We look forward to this [park] being successful,” he said.

Berger confirmed to committee members that the park, which will be located far in the City’s northeast, and does not directly border the County on either the north or east side.

Committee members had no questions for the City of Airdrie representatives, and voted unanimously to accept the City’s regional park presentation for information.
