Re: “Westmark Holdings offers estate homes in Cooper’s Crossing,” Aug. 27

Dear editor,

Congratulations to Westmark Holdings Ltd. for having a fantastic concept of green space, pathways, play areas and pleasing design guidelines in the engineered development of Cooper’s Crossing. Having homes offered into the $1 million plus estate category brings Cooper’s Crossing into a new elite league.

As residents of the area for the past several years, who have lived across Canada, we have found it unfortunate that both the City of Airdrie and Westmark Holdings Ltd. have not researched other Canadian cities that have established standards related to residential on-street parking and restricted storage of RVs on properties for extended periods of time.

In Canada, building guidelines are such that one is not allowed to build to the extreme perimeter of one’s property. In Airdrie, however, RVs, boats and trailers the size of a semi-trailer are permitted to be stored for weeks on end in residential areas, resulting in Cooper’s Crossing becoming more of a RV and multi-vehicle parking lot than a high quality residential area.

In addition, the safety of neighbourhood residents is severely compromised while backing out of driveways with the obstructed view of oncoming traffic on the street. In Cooper’s the expensive housing, unfortunately, will quickly be devaluated with the current practices and regulations when one comes to sell. Future Cooper’s phases - with more room for RV and multi-vehicle storage on properties in Cooper’s - will only add to the downgrade of the area.

High-quality residential areas facilitate commercial storage for these purposes. It appears to be time that Westmark Holdings and the City of Airdrie re-evaluate the residential regulations and make the appropriate revisions to facilitate Cooper’s Crossing. It’s time for the City of Airdrie to set new standards worthy of sustaining a “Premier” residential community for the years to come.”

Ken and Louise Vickets, Airdrie
