Nominations for the Progressive Conservative party in Airdrie began Jan. 5 in preparation for a yet-to-be-announced spring election.
A 13-day window will be open for candidates to officially file nomination papers and a Jan. 26 meeting will be held if there are a large number of candidates. A final vote would be held Jan. 28.
By press time, nobody had announced they were planning to run, however there has been interest, according to David Sealock, PC party nomination chair for Airdrie.
“I think that there’s people looking at this in a very serious way,” he said. “We can’t divulge anything until we have nomination papers.”
This will be the first year Airdrie will be its own riding. Previously, it was amalgamated with Chestermere, Three Hills and Rocky View.
In order to run, a $500 processing fee is required and the individual must live within the boundaries of the constituency. However, there is no minimum time a person must have lived within Airdrie to run.
Whoever secures the nomination will run against incumbent Rob Anderson, a former PC who joined the Wildrose Party in 2010.
Nominations close Jan. 18 at 4 p.m.
