The cheque presentation took place at the Habitat for Humanity project in Cochrane at the corner of Pope Avenue and Sibbald Street.

The Town of Cochrane and the Cochrane Society for Housing Options (CSHO) presented Habit for Humanity (HFH) Calgary with $500,000 to put towards building homes in their community, June 14.

The money came through the Town of Cochrane from the Province as part of a funding program from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

“Our partnership with the Town and CSHO means we can help even more families in Cochrane get into affordable homes,” said Leslie Tamagi, HFH’s president and chief executive officer. “Getting this kind of support makes it even easier.”

CHSO board co-Chair Jim Graham agrees.

“These partnerships have certainly accelerated the CSHO’s ability to promote access to safe, suitable and diverse housing appropriate to the incomes of Cochrane citizens,” he said.

According to Tamagi, HFH has a partnership with both Cochrane organizations and is currently building two five-plex units in the town.

The first unit, started last fall, is now receiving its final touches and five local families will be moving in as early as July 1. The second unit will be ready late this year or early 2012.

“It is really exciting, it has all come together quite quickly,” said Tamagi. “It is our first build in Cochrane.”

According to Tamagi, the Town has been very progressive in its affordable housing plan. The project has also been well received by the community and volunteers.

“(We have had) great community response,” said Tamagi. “We are still looking for sponsorship. We have a lot of opportunities for people financially and for volunteering on the build.”
