Residents in Airdrie and Cochrane will now have a chance to connect with students and teachers in real time within the comfort of their own homes.
Bow Valley College’s new Real Time Online initiative will allow users to enrol in five different high school courses through eCampus Alberta, an online classroom.
Lessons will be held during weekdays and weeknights and will allow students to virtually discuss with fellow classmates and instructors and can re-listen to lecture recordings.
“The recordings are such a big thing because for so many of our students, English isn’t their first language,” said Deborah Scott, instructor at Bow Valley College. “That part of it is such a huge benefit to students.”
Currently, 4,000 adults in Alberta have used the college’s eCampus service since it began in 1998.
During the evening, 30-level courses are offered while lower level classes can be taken during the daytime.
“We are to be providing help and education within our area (of Alberta),” said Scott. “And now it doesn’t matter if they are out on a farm.”
Students can interact in real time with others virtually and ask instructors questions on the spot or through e-mail.
