The Morison family was named the 2011 Master Farm Family, June 23.
The Morison farm, located west of Goldenrod Hall, is a fourth generation family business that focuses on cattle and grain.
Pete Morison, now 93, started the family farm in 1946 and passed it on to his son Bill. It is now a 3,400-acre farm, run by Rod and Cheryl and their children, Harley and Carter, that includes a 4,000-head cattle feedlot.
“I am honoured,” said Pete, adding that it was a surprise to win the award.
Kim Magnuson, Rocky View councillor and Agricultural Services Board chair, presented the award at the Goldenrod Hall during the County’s annual agricultural tour.
“Every year, it is a challenge for our judging team to choose just one family to receive the award, and we are delighted to be giving this year’s award to the Morison family,” said Magnuson. “They demonstrate outstanding community spirit and they are forward-thinkers in the agricultural industry.”
According to Magnuson, the family stays current with industry standards, and makes a point of maintaining a balance between agricultural practices and the environment. As a sustainable farm operation they utilize progressive grazing practices, research initiatives and GPS technology to increase production and minimize waste.
The family is also involved in a number of volunteer efforts, actively participating in 4-H events, the Calgary Stampede and GrowSafe Systems research initiatives.
When questioned about how the family makes it all work, Cheryl said: “we just stick together and problem solve together and make the best of every day.”
