Library Link: Crosswords expert leads APL's adult author series

Over the years, Airdrie Public Library (APL) has been pleased to welcome a wide variety of authors, who have shared their imagination and creativity with our patrons of all ages.

Over the years, Airdrie Public Library (APL) has been pleased to welcome a wide variety of authors, who have shared their imagination and creativity with our patrons of all ages.

Following on our successful adult author series in fall 2011 – which showcased Andrew Nikiforuk (Empire of the Beetle), Brian Brennan (Leaving Dublin) and contributors to Country Roads: Memoirs from Rural Canada – we are again hosting three author evenings this winter.

Our first event is Feb. 10, when our guest will be Gwen Sjogren, author of the O Canada Crosswords and Cross-Canada Crosswords series. A crossword fan since childhood who began designing puzzles in her 20s, Sjogren loves the many uses of her language and she is more than happy to share her experience. For her author visit, she will be facilitating an ‘All About Crosswords’ workshop to encourage puzzlers to challenge themselves, tease their brains and hone their skills. (Sjogren’s books will be on sale for $10.) The evening will run from 7 to 9 p.m. and registration is required.

The second evening in the series will be held March 16, when three very different authors will grace our facility. The three writers – literary fiction author Betty Jane Hegerat (The Boy), human fictionist Lee Kvern (The Matter of Sylvie) and poet Vivian Hansen (Leylines of my Flesh) – will be sharing their journeys and experiences.

Our series will wrap up April 20 with Lyn Hancock, photojournalist, writer and wildlife photographer whose works include There’s a Seal in my Sleeping Bag and Tabasco: The Saucy Raccoon. Hancock will be talking about her broad and varied career path, which has included teaching, raising orphaned animals and promoting conservation.
