Alberta barley commission re-elects all three directors

Three directors of the Alberta Barley Commission (ABC), including one from Rocky View County, were recently re-elected by acclamation for the next three years.

Three directors of the Alberta Barley Commission (ABC), including one from Rocky View County, were recently re-elected by acclamation for the next three years.

Commission chairman Matt Sawyer of Acme will continue his role as director for region two for the ABC, which represents the province’s 17,000 barley farmers.

“I’m very excited to once again represent the Alberta Barley Commission for another three years,” Sawyer said. “Our board is committed to growing the demand for barley and we want to bring about positive changes to the industry and find new opportunities for barley growers.”

Region one director Greg Stamp, of Enchant, and director-at-large Glenn Logan, of Lomond, are the other two members continuing in their roles. All three positions, which were announced Nov. 8, were open for nomination until the end of October.

Sawyer said there has been a lot of a positive change to the ABC, Canada’s only barley commission, recently and plenty of excitement in the industry.

“A few of the things we’re working on are items that we are continuing, like trying to expand the market of Alberta Barley to Japan,” he said. “There are also a number of projects, such as the Barley Project 180, which focuses on sustainable farming practices. We’re basically looking at continuing the efficiency of barley foods and the ongoing work that the barley commission has been doing. The idea is to make sure that the producers’ interests are represented going forward in this market system.”
