Burley family take on their biggest fight

Less than one per cent of sarcoma diagnosis, which equates to only 200 world wide, have received the diagnosis of CIC – Rearranged Sarcoma, and Katie is one of them, according to a press release.

A former councilor of the City of Airdrie is shaving his head to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.

Fred Burley and his family recently had their their world turned upside down after their adult daughter Katie was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

Less than one per cent of sarcoma diagnosis, which equates to only 200 world wide, have received the diagnosis of CIC – Rearranged Sarcoma, and Katie is one of them, according to a press release from the longtime Airdrie family.

“I am a father who loves his daughter," Fred Burley wrote. "Our Katie has been battling a very rare cancer called CIC - Rearranged Sarcoma."

Burley is currently a school trustee for Rocky View Schools and has made giving back and community betterment, part of his daily living.

His wife, Sharon Burley, who was a teacher with Rocky View Schools is also well known in Airdrie for her time with many Airdrie events and organizations that she contributed to.

"As supportive parents, and a need to always help, Fred will be shaving his head May 25 in honour of his daughter who is currently losing her hair through treatments," the press release stated. "Fred and Sharon are using this opportunity to raise awareness and funds for research."

The event will take place on May 25 at 1861 Local Bar & Grill, 1861 Meadowbrook Drive, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Fred Burley's head will be shaved at 8 p.m. by the person with the largest donation.

"The Burley family’s goal is to not only help their daughter, but the dollars raised may just be a contributing factor in finding a cure," their press release added.
